Imagine two neighbors—both college-educated, both living in the same zip code, both typing the same four words into a search engine on the same Tuesday morning. The words are identical. The moment is identical. And yet the results that populate their screens are, in meaningful ways, entirely different documents. Different sources. Different framings. Different facts given prominence.
This is not a hypothetical. It is, according to researchers who study algorithmic information systems, an everyday occurrence across the United States. And the consequences of that divergence are only beginning to be understood.
How Personalization Became the Default
Search engines did not always work this way. In the early years of the commercial web, a query returned roughly the same ranked list of results regardless of who submitted it. The algorithm evaluated the page, not the person.

The term "filter bubble" was introduced by internet activist Eli Pariser more than a decade ago, but the concept has grown considerably more complex since his initial formulation. Early discussions focused primarily on social media feeds.
